The Billion Child Foundation entered its International Schools Centre of Excellence Programme to win the Innovation in Education category of the 2021 Commonwealth Education Awards.
The winners of each category will be invited to Kenya in 2021 to receive their awards and showcase their work at the Commonwealth Conference of Education Ministers. Their work will be profiled across the Commonwealth.
We believe BCF stands a reasonable chance of winning this award in view of BCF being, to the best of our knowledge, the first organisation in the world to develop a proven, scalable, replicable and sustainable programme capable of enabling the ministries of education of every country to reinvent every public school in their country to become a centre of excellence within 3-5 years.
Add to that the facts that the Programme:
- Is driven from the top by the Permanent Secretary of Education in each country
- Was funded by UNICEF in Lesotho which resulted in 61% more students graduating from previously under-performing schools
- 70% of students at South African schools whose principals had attended the Programme gained a university or technical university entrance matriculation pass in 2019.
- Has already enabled nearly 2 million students to attend schools which have or are currently in training to become centres of excellence.
