We congratulate Dr Tendai Gumbie on receiving his PhD and take great pleasure in sharing his message to the youth of Africa.
“I would like to encourage young people in Africa to stay in school for as long as possible and to take education seriously, to do your homework, listen to your teachers and parents, respect your elders, play sport to keep active and healthy, socialise and mix with good friends, stay away from bad friends and drugs, and stay in school until you matriculate.
“If you do all this, you can go to university or college and become anything you dream of becoming.
“Life is all about making good decisions and choices. Always try and choose good over bad, no matter how difficult it may be.
“I wish you all the best and hope I can inspire you to dream big so that one day you can become whatever you want to be. Remember, hard work, resilience and perseverance will help you succeed.
“While I was lucky to attend good schools tens of millions of children are condemned by failing government schools throughout Africa to leave school barely able to read and write. I therefore unstintingly support the work of the Billion Child Foundation which has a programme capable of transforming every school in Africa into a centre of excellence.”
