On Wednesday the 2019 matriculation results were released in South Africa.
Previously under-performing public schools whose principals had attended the SA Schools Centre of Excellence Programme achieved as follows:
52% of schools enjoyed over 70% of their learners gaining a Bachelor or Diploma pass. (In South Africa a Bachelors pass enables university admission and a Diploma pass provides admission to a technical university). This is a big deal!
51% of the schools enjoyed over 90% of learners gaining a National Senior Certificate (NSC) pass. This is also a significant achievement.
12% of the schools enjoyed 100% of their learners gaining a NSC pass. Another big deal!
In the Free State Province 90% of learners gained a NSC while 74% of those who wrote obtained a Bachelor or Diploma pass.
Learners in the Northern and Eastern Cape provinces also achieved significantly higher results.
The percentage of learners gaining a NSC and a Bachelor or Diploma pass in the Eastern and Northern Cape Provinces increased dramatically.
Province | 2015 | 2019 | ||
| Percent learners gaining a NSC | Percent learners gaining a Bachelor or Diploma | Percent learners gaining a NSC | Percent learners gaining a Bachelor or Diploma |
Northern Cape (John Taolo Gaetsewe District) | 58 | 39 | 81 | 63 |
Eastern Cape | 46 | 28 | 71 | 52 |
The above achievements deserve immense praise as 96% of the schools trained in the Free State, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape are situated in rural areas or townships.
