There is an excellent article in the Australian Teacher Magazine this week which provides practical ideas on how to help young children to increase their love of reading and improve their skills in reading with comprehension.
Here is one of the ideas.
Group books in the classroom or school library by interest group e.g., humour, dinosaurs, author, graphic novels, fantasy, etc.
This makes it easier for children to find books that interest them. Research demonstrates that students are more likely to read books in a series or topic or by an author they are familiar with.
The Dewey system is great for librarians, but kids prefer grouping by interest group.
